Indian Premier League entered its 2nd decade yesterday with the official announcement of retained players for the 11th season of the mega event. This edition of the IPL also marks the return of its two most popular teams Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir etc are now at the centre of all the discussions and expert talks.
There were few no brainers as well as some gaping surprises when it came to retaining players yesterday in the event held at Bengaluru. The obvious and happy retention came from the CSK camp that retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja. This also means that modern great Indian spinner R Ashwin won’t be a part of this celebrated franchise. Rajasthan Royals retained Steve Smith but the surprise was letting go off their spark player Ajinkya Rahane.
Delhi Daredevils as always have shown great faith in its young breed of players by retaining Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Chris Morris, the flamboyant all-rounder from South Africa finds a place for his third year with Delhi Daredevils. Ricky Ponting will be seen coaching this daredevil team. Kolkata Knight Riders, by letting go off its two time winning captain Gautam Gambhir sent the biggest shockwaves across the city of joy. They showed their interest in the two Caribbean modern day maestros, the fearless Andre Russell and the ever-so-mystifying Sunil Narine. Mumbai Indians gave the complete no brainer by retaining their most dashing and reliable players Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.
Sunrisers Hyderabad talked of impact players yesterday and showed complete boldness in retaining David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The biggest surprising retention came from the RCB camp that retained Sarfaraz Khan. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers were the most obvious retentions for this firebrand franchise. The retention of Sarfaraz Khan has raised eyebrows of every cricket enthusiast and shocked the cricket pundits. Kings XI Punjab who had already made their plans clear of retaining single player from the lot, retained Axar Patel from their entire previous squad.
So with the retention done, it would be interesting now to see how the official auction pans out on 27th & 28th of January when owners hunt for new bunch of players. It will be also exciting to see which players get lucky to join back their teams through the rule of Right To Match. IPL has successfully grabbed global eyes with each passing edition and this year should be no surprise when it comes to entertaining the audience wherever they may be across the world.
