“Week 109 cleanup, Volunteers abused by goons for picking up garbage. Administrative lethargy, non clearance of picked up garbage and abuses are what we are facing. World largest beach cleanup is suspended. Tried my best and I failed. Forgive me my ocean and my country.”
– Afroz shah
Afroz Shah, a Mumbai based lawyer who started the ‘clean Versova’ campaign in October 2015, gave up on the initiative which he started almost 109 weeks before, last Sunday. The campaign led to the clean-up of around 9kgs of garbage from the beaches of Mumbai.
Under this campaign, around 4600 tons of plastics have been removed from the beaches, with the help and dedication of the volunteers from around twelve countries. “Non-clearance of picked up garbage and abuses by goons” according to Afroz, forced him to stop the campaign.
On the other hand, the Bombay Municipal Corporation officials blamed the citizens for failing to collect the trash properly and stated that the campaign needed more participation to pull the garbage out from the sand. On approaching the Versova Cooperator, Mr. Yogira Dabhadhar and MLA Bharti Lavhekar, they said that soon they will meet with Afroz and will sort out solutions for the problem.
Afroz Shah, for his efforts has been awarded with The “Champions of Earth” award, by the United Nation for their highest honor in Environment development. Not only been appreciated by our Honorable Prime Minister for his efforts, Afroz has also been appreciated by both Hollywood and Bollywood actors such as Leonado Di Caprio and Amitabh Bachchan.
We tried to contact Afroz Shah but were unable to reach him.
